The role involves stack and store materials safely to avoid wastage; dig foundation trenches and pits with pick and shovel; break out old walls and concrete with a jackhammer breaker; set out levels with line and plumb under the mason's direction; mix concrete and mortar to the correct ratio, by hand or in a pan mixer; pour and spread concrete, then compact it with a poker vibrator.
